DIY Upcycled Cake Stand

Being clumsy as I am has left me with a few incomplete sets of plates, cups, and other one off pieces over the years. This is a fun DIY project using these odds and ends you have left over in the kitchen to make whimsical cake stands!

This will be the first of many DIY upcycled videos and ideas to come.  Repurposing something you would consider as junk into a one-of-a-kind piece you will treasure for years to come is a fabulous way to engage in an eco-friendly LIVEstyle.  Most people (myself included) seem to overlook the first and last part of the “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse” waste hierarchy.

I have trouble wrapping my mind around the amount of trash we accumulate.  Practicing the “reduce and reuse” portion of the waste management cycle is crucial to curbing this outrageous number …

4.4 pounds: The amount of trash generated daily, on average, by every American; Packed in cubed feet it would be the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Also, a little side note … this video may seem a bit amateur; well because that's exactly what I am when it comes to video making and editing. As a recovering perfectionist, the different size text and wobbly picture drives me insane but here it is out for everyone to see in the wide wide world. My toddler has taught me to embrace imperfections and see them as an opportunity for enlightenment and levity.

Let me know what you think! And please share your LIVEstyle upcycling adventures!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1 - Wash the pieces you would like to use with warm water and soap. Let dry completely.

Step 2 - Design the arrangement of your cake stand. Make sure base pieces are level.

Step 3 - Prepare Eco-Bond Clear Sealant for use. First cut the tip of the tube at an angle (make a small opening) and then puncture the inside of the tube.

Step 4 - Load your caulk gun with Eco-Bond.

Step 5 - Bead the rim of your cup or whatever piece you are using for the base of your cake stand with Eco-Bond.

Step 6 - Place the base you just beaded with Eco-Bond in the center on the bottom side of the plate or bowl.

Step 7 - Make sure the base is centered by using a tape measure. Make adjustments if necessary.

Step 8 - Wipe excess Eco-Bond if necessary with rag. It washes away with soap and water.

Step 9 - Let the piece dry completely (24 hours).

Care instructions - Hand wash with soap and water. Do not place in dishwasher.
